Sirex PheroLure® Data Sheet

(Sirex noctilio)

*ONLY FOR SALE IN COUNTRIES WHERE REGISTERED*

Trapping system

The Panel Trap is used in the capturing of the Sirex wood wasp (Sirex noctilio). The Panel Trap consists of four (4) main parts (trap top, trap bottom, trap centre and plastic bucket). The trap is made of black coryx (plastic 3mm). A wire is attached at the top and four retainers to connect the bucket to the trap bottom. Pour water with a surfactant into the bucket to kill all insects entering the trap.

Sirex PheroLure®

The semiochemical-impregnated bulb used to attract the Sirex wood wasp that goes into the trap is known as the Sirex PheroLure®. The Sirex PheroLure® needs to be replaced every five (5) weeks. Any extra Sirex PheroLure® should be kept in their individual foil pouches in a fridge in order to prolong shelf life before use.

How, where and when to hang traps

  • How: Use a minimum of three traps per compartment. Compartments should be spaced 100 meters apart. Always hang the trap 8 – 2.4m above ground level. This will allow for maximum airflow, to distribute the semiochemical molecules (which are heavier than air), across the field. Place the trap out of the way of farm implements, the direct reach of spray machines and irrigation systems, in partial shade. Secure the trap firmly to the pole/stand so that it does not sway in the wind. Identify each trap by a trap/block number for later reference. Preferentially place traps 10 – 50 metres outside of the tree compartment. Sirex wood wasp often fly along roadways and in open clearings in plantations.
  • Where: A map layout of the plantation will assist in the correct placement of traps. A higher density may be necessary in unevenly shaped fields, fields with excessive slopes, hollows or where the prevailing wind may adversely affect trap catches.
  • When: Place Panel Trap® in the plantation during October and keep monitoring until the middle of January of each year.

Inspection and maintenance of traps

  • Inspection: The traps should be inspected weekly on the same day of each week (7-day intervals). The number of Sirex wood wasps caught in the trap bottom, together with the trap number and date needs to be recorded.
  • Maintenance: The traps need to be cleaned on a regular basis, even if no Sirex wood wasps have been captured. The trap bucket might get clogged with pine needles, by-catch and other foreign matter over time. Replace the water mixture every week, depending on the number of wasps caught.
